Collection of Buddhist and Taoist Document in Chinese Local Chronicles is accomplished by chief editor and expert Professor He Jianming, Faculty of Philosophy of China, Buddhist Religious Theory Institute of acclaimed Renmin University. It is a fruitful essence of National Social Science Fund Project with also an academic title as Chinese Local Chronicles of Buddhism and Taoism Document Collective ( before 1949)" (project number: 11&ZD119) with 1039 volumes (big 32 Hardback) in total.

The book directly collects the various compilations of 6772 volumes of national, provincial, municipal districts, counties and township local chronicles before 1949 (except Buddhist Temple Chronicles). Among them, there are 337 lost chronicles of Han, Tang, Song, Liao, Jin and Yuan Dynasty, 4 kinds of Tang, 38 volumes in Song, one in Jin, 9 volumes in Yuan, 704 volumes in Ming and 5108 volumes in Qing (including the old chronicle edition of Qing Dynasty), 1569 volumes in the Republic of China (including the new version of the old local chronicles). 143 volumes of all kinds of manuscripts, more than various types of manuscripts, 38 national unification chronicles, among which Beijing has 67 volumes, Tibet has 50 volumes, Hong Kong holds 2 volumes, Macao has 10 volumes, Taiwan holds 55 volumes etc. Because some local chronicles have a collection of records, so the book’s actual volumes are up to 6813.

The book consists of three series with temples volume, characters volume and poetry inscriptions and stone volume respectively. It complies with the latest 2012 Chinese official administrative divisions to divide the regions as (North China, Northeast China, East China, Central China, southwest, northwest, Southern China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) historical chronicles and the provincial, municipal districts and counties township and local chronicle order, in sequence arrangement, and the selection of documents in front of the unity of all the new literature belongs to the copyright page, indicating the category, name, provinces (to city prefecture-level ), important information of local records, compilation, chronicle editing etc.

The book is by far the largest Chinese local chronicles the special historical documents collected, following the Buddhist Tripitaka, Buddhist Temple Chronicles and Taoist Canon and Taoist Scriptures which is the most important and mainstream Buddhism and Taoism chronicle outside the existing religious scriptures and historical chronicles of Buddhism and Taoism in China by reflecting the ancient Chinese and modern society in the Buddhism and Taoism’s original appearance. It thoroughly manifests the distinct characteristics of Buddhist and Taoist traditional culture in historical, national, regional, social and practical perspective in more than two thousand years of Chinese history and important historical links & inseparable practices between contemporary Buddhism and Taoism.

Worked on for six years by Huadian Weiye Book Co, the book has obtained the support of more than a dozen academic institutions such as Renmin University ofChina, Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Minzu University of China and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Many Chinese famous experts and scholars guided the book and twenty full-time professional editors fulfilled the task of collating and editing.

《中国地方志佛教道教文献汇纂》是由中国人民大学佛教与宗教学理论研究所及哲学院教授何建明博士担任首席专家的国家社会科学基金重大项目《中国地方志佛教道教文献汇纂(1949年前)》(项目编号:11&ZD119)的主要成果,共1039册(大32开精装本)
全书直接收录1949年以前编纂的全国和各省市区县及乡镇的各种地方志文献(寺观志除外)6772种。其中,汉—唐和宋辽金元方志辑佚本337种,唐本4种,宋本38种,金本1种,元本9种,明本704本,清本5108种(含旧志清刻本),民国本1569本(含旧志新版本):各类稿本143种,各类抄本800余种:全国一统志38种,北京67种,西藏50种,香港2种,澳门10种,台湾55种等,由于有些地方志是多种志书的合集,故全书实际收录方志总计6813种。
全书分寺观卷、人物卷和诗文碑刻卷三个系列,依照2012年中国官方公布的最新行政区划,按地区(华北、东北、华东、华中、华南、西南、西北、和港澳台)及所属的省市区县乡镇和方志版本的历史时间顺序,依次先后排列,并将全部的各甄选文献的前面统一新增该文献所属方志的版权页,标明类别、地名----- 省市区(到地级市区)、地方志、修纂者及时代、版本种类及时间等重要信息。
全书是迄今为止中国地方志文献最大规模的专题历史文献结集,也是继佛教《大藏经》、“佛寺志”和道教《道藏》、“道观志”等教内文献及正史文献之外最重要的佛教和道教的主流和主要文献,较已有的各类教内和正史佛教道教文献典籍更全面真实地反映了中国古代和近代社会中的佛教和道教文献的本来面貌,充分展现了二千多年来中国佛教和道教文化传统的历史性、民族性、地域性、社会性和实践性等鲜明特色及其当代佛教和道教之间不可分割的重要历史联系。
全书历时六年,由华典伟业图书有限公司总策划,在中国人民大学、北京大学、北京师范大学、中国社会科学院、中央民族大学和香港中文大学等十多家学术机构的许多中国著名专家学者的指导和帮助下由二十位专职和专业编辑人员完成。
